AI and Copyright War  – What do you think, who will Win?

Date:

AI has now been widely used by industries, companies, and even by businessmen and individuals for completing their work and assigned tasks. There’s no problem in using Artificial Intelligence because it somehow assists the users widely in terms of researching and fact-checking. But the main question that arises is – Copyright. Yes, there’s an ongoing debate for years about AI innovation and Copyright laws because for the creators, musicians, writers, and artists, this debate becomes personal because of the fact that their creations are their livelihood and a matter of recognition.

This war of Copyright and AI isn’t just about human and machine conflict, but about the ownership, creativity, validity, credibility, and originality in the present era. Let’s understand in brief about – Who will be winning in this war?

AI and Copyright War – Root cause of the Conflict –

AI and Copyright War

AI tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E, when given a prompt, generate images, texts, audios, and videos without simply copying and pasting the actual one. Artificial Intelligence never copies everything in a whole; it just analyzes the structure and generates the outputs in the form of prompted media. The reason for the conflict is that the added prompt might show the creations of modern artists of the same genre as given at the prompt, which infuriates the matter of legal issues.

The main problem with Artificial Intelligence is that it learns the art of making and the style of producing anything, which in turn makes it legally unacceptable, as it’s the second version of the original format. Copyright laws protect the expression of an idea, not the particular idea itself. Media of any kind, like Songs, photographs, or paintings, originality is protected, but as Artificial Intelligence is designed to create a similar piece of the original, that’s where the issue arises, because it’s like the second copy of the same.

This particular originality and style issues infuriate the debate because, from the creator’s perspective, they are losing revenues due to the tools, which increases the chances of plagiarism concerns. From Public Interest, they are open to the tools that provide you with the second version of everything while demeaning the actual creativity of the original. And from an Artificial Intelligence perspective, prompts provide the transformative and creative output with fair-use claims.

When we are talking about debates, we must stand still and hear from both sides before coming to a conclusion. Let’s hear the Creator and Artificial Intelligence’s side to understand everyone’s perspective.

AI and Copyright War – From Creator’s Side –

  • Losing Recognition –

See, originality has its own value, but think about the prompts that create the song or a poem similar to the songwriter and poet’s writings, who will be credited then? The creator, no. That recognition will be given to the prompt writer and the AI tool. Isn’t this a matter of concern and losing recognition from something that is exactly copied from the main source?

  • Loss in Earnings –

As I have mentioned earlier, Artificial Intelligence generates the content in the form of the original creator by learning their style and structure. As per the creators, this directly affects their work because of the fact that how human mentality works. They won’t be paying in number for the original work when some AI expert is providing them the actual content similar to the original creator for a lesser amount.

AI and Copyright War – From AI’s side defence –

  • Output Originality –

According to the AI companies, until the prompts given are for the replica of anything specific, everything that AI generates is fresh and new. According to them, AI is innovative and provides you with real-time data about the given prompt, and just learns the style of any existing source.

  • Innovative Approach to teach new creatives –

According to the Companies, Artificial Intelligence brings a newer approach to teaching the creatives in society in terms of newer outputs about any specific topic. They termed these as the revolution, just like once computers and printing were, because AI expands access to knowledge and creativity.

  • Fair Usage –

Outputs that are generated by these AI tools aren’t copying anything similar to the existing ones, but transforming the new creatives while taking learnings from the existing ones. As per the AI companies, Artificial Intelligence observes, learns, reacts, and provides outputs just like humans.

Writer’s Saying –

Content Writer

As a Content Writer, I want to add my perspective too on an ongoing debate where originality and credibility are the matter of discussion. I am neutral here because this debate isn’t just finished yet and has a next part too, but from this blog, my point is contradictory. I agree to the fact that AI didn’t copy but learns the style and the structure of the existing original format, but this also demeans the original format. This war of copyright issues will go long but soon, the winner will be announced in the next blog with actual proof. So, stay tuned.
