Walmart x OpenAI: Ushering in the Era of Agentic Commerce

Date:

How Walmart’s AI partnership is redefining how we shop, stock, and spend.

Walmart has formally partnered with OpenAI, the largest retail-tech transaction in 2025. Walmart revealed it on October 13 and immediately created market optimism — Walmart’s stock went up 5% in days.

The new integration means ChatGPT customers can now purchase straight from the chatbot — from planning meals for a week to replenishing staples. The AI will browse Walmart’s vast inventory, recommend items, and even order, moving e-commerce to a new paradigm higher than the search bar.

Walmart calls this new paradigm “agentic commerce” — where artificial intelligence responds to customers not just by reacting but by learning from behavior, predicting needs, and acting ahead.

“We’re excited to partner with Walmart to make everyday purchases a little simpler. It’s just one way AI will help people every day under our work together.”
Sam Altman, cofounder and CEO of OpenAI

In addition to customer convenience, Walmart is deploying AI end to end — from forecasting stock and optimizing logistics to training employees and settling customer disputes.

By making this audacious move, Walmart isn’t merely hawking wares — it’s hawking a vision of the future.

The retail revolution isn’t coming around the corner. It’s now.
