In August 2020, Dharmesh Barai, a resident of Nerul, Navi Mumbai, was heartbroken by the sight of mangrove forests drowning in waste. The once-thriving ecosystem was buried under layers of plastic, broken glass, and syringes. Rather than waiting for someone else to act, Dharmesh decided to take matters into his own hands. Armed with nothing but gloves, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility, he began cleaning the polluted shores—alone.
A Lone Battle Against Waste
At first, his efforts seemed like a drop in the ocean. The sheer volume of trash was overwhelming, and people doubted whether a single person could make a difference. But Dharmesh refused to give up. Day after day, he returned to the mangroves, picking up waste piece by piece. His dedication soon caught the attention of others, and gradually, volunteers started joining him.
A Growing Force for Change
What started as a solo effort quickly transformed into a full-fledged movement. Today, Dharmesh Barai leads a group of more than 90,000 volunteers, collectively known as the Environment Life Foundation. Together, they have successfully removed over 750 tonnes of waste from the mangroves, helping to restore the delicate ecosystem that serves as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and flooding.
The Power of Community Action
Beyond just cleaning up, Dharmesh and his team have been actively spreading awareness about waste management, urging citizens to adopt responsible disposal habits. His efforts have also drawn the attention of civic authorities, prompting better waste management initiatives in the region.
“Like we care for our homes, we must care for our planet,” Dharmesh emphasizes. His words resonate with thousands, proving that real change begins with individual action.

A Lesson in Environmental Responsibility
Dharmesh’s journey is a powerful reminder that one person’s determination can ignite a movement. His story is an inspiration to those who believe in the power of grassroots activism. At a time when climate change and environmental degradation are pressing concerns, his work showcases the impact of community-driven efforts in safeguarding our natural heritage.
The mangroves of Navi Mumbai are breathing again, thanks to a man who dared to take the first step. And the movement is only growing stronger.
